Traditional and Modern Ways of Creating Mathematical Graphs

Author: John C Arkin

Mathematical graphs are sets of objects connected together using links. In some cases, two or more pairs of objects can be plotted all within the same graph. The objects connected are referred to as vertices while the links are called edges. Typically, the objects are dots joined by lines.

Traditional ways of creating math graphs

Back in school, you may have experienced plotting math graphs on printed graphing paper. Using the horizontal and vertical lines in the graph paper, you can create the links between the objects. Here are some specific steps on the traditional ways of creating math graphs:

1. Look at your ordered pairs. Ordered pairs are two numbers that should be plotted on the graph. For instance, you are given the numbers (4, 5). The number 4 represents the x-axis of the graph or the horizontal line. The number 5 represents the vertical line or the y-axis.

2. Plotting the ordered pairs. Locate the points on the grid or the map. For instance, you have indicated the numbers 1 to 5 both for your x and y axes, you can plot the points accordingly. For the ordered pair (4, 5), what you need to do is place a dot on the graph paper where the number 4 on the x-axis meets the number 5 on the y-axis.

3. Create your graph. You can create a bar graph or a line graph or any other type of graph for such example. That will then depend upon what your instructor requires you to do.

Modern ways of creating math graphs

It's already the computer age. And even math graphs are not spared from following the trend. Yes, you can now create math graphs using more modern techniques such as:

1. Go to a "create a graph" web page.

2. Choose your graph design. It's either you choose a bar graph, a line graph, a pie graph or an XY graph. You can also choose the direction, shape and style for your graph.

3. Enter the necessary data. You will be required to place a title for your graph. Then choose the number of items that need to be plotted. Provide the item label and the corresponding value as well.

4. Create data labels. In here, you will be given the chance to choose the font size, color and type for each data in your graph.

5. You can then preview the design from all the steps above.

6. Once you want how the graph preview looks like, you can print and save the math graph you have created. You can simply print the graph from the webpage or download the graph to your PC. The graph may also be sent to your specific email address.

There are some math forums with various approaches on creating math graphs using your computers. You will be given specific instructions on how to create the graph of your choice. You may also be required to insert a disk then locate a ClarisWorks file as well. Then you can enter the data, make your graph, change colors and fonts and manipulate the graphic styles for your math graph.
